Selovin LA For Sheep & Cattle contains Barium selenate, which slowly releases selenium into the body after injecting it under the skin. As the selenium is slowly released over time, protection against selenium deficiency in cattle is up to 12 months and in sheep for up to 18 months.

Selovin LA works to elevate selenium blood and tissue levels in deficient states. Selenium is a trace element that is vital for normal metabolism; it is an essential antioxidant that prevents and repairs cell damage and is a key component of proteins essential for muscle function, the immune system and the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Selenium is necessary for growth and fertility.

Selenium is an essential element in the diet of animals and has a variety of roles. Severe selenium deﬁciency will damage the heart and skeletal muscles. Common manifestations of selenium deficiency include ill thrift in lambs and calves, lowered milk production, lowered fertility and Nutritional Muscular Dystrophy (White Muscle Disease).

Directions Of Use

Dose Rates:

Sheep:

Lambs at weaning – 0.5mL
Adult Sheep – 1mL

Cattle:

Cattle – 1ml per 50kg body weight, equivalent to 1mg selenium per kg, by subcutaneous injection high on the neck behind the ear.

Administration:

Discard within 24 hours of first broaching.
Shake the Selovin LA pack well before use to ensure re-suspension of contents.
1mL per 50 kg bodyweight, equivalent to 1mg selenium per kg, by subcutaneous injection high on the neck behind the ear.
Raise the skin into a “tent” and insert the needle parallel to the body, ensuring the injection is placed under the skin and not into the muscle.
When treating many animals, a suitable multi-dose injector must be used.
The frequency of dosing should be related to the severity of the deficiencies.
The product will last up to 12 months in cattle.
Check the selenium status of animals before retreating.
Consult your animal health advisor for advice specific to your herd.

Caution: To avoid carcass damage

Sterilise all injection apparatus by boiling (or equivalent) before use.
Avoid using strong disinfectants on the apparatus.
Maintain cleanliness at all times.
Keep needles sharp and clean. Replace frequently.
Use the shortest needle possible, certainly not exceeding 15mm.
As far as possible, avoid the injection of animals during wet weather or under dusty conditions.
This product must be injected only under the skin.
If possible, inject high on the neck behind the ear.

Tips For Use

Contraindications:

This product is contraindicated (not) for use by intra-muscular injection. This may cause a serious reaction. To ensure this does not occur, administer the product only by subcutaneous injection high on the neck behind the ear.
A lesion may have formed at the injection site about a week after injection. Such lesions usually diminish over time but may last up to 3 months or longer.
This product should not be used when selenium uptake from pasture is high or selenium is provided by other means (such as pasture top dressing, vaccine, pellets, or selenium drenches) if blood selenium levels at treatment are high.
Users can determine selenium status by consulting their veterinarian.
The recommended dose and frequency of dosing should not be exceeded as there is no specific antidote.

Precautions:

Take care when handling weak or pregnant animals to avoid unnecessary stress.
During the early part of pregnancy, accurate dosing is important, and particular care should be taken to avoid overdosing.

Side Effects:

Systemic allergic reactions have been reported with this product.
These have usually occurred within half an hour of treatment.
Observe cattle after treatment and seek veterinary advice and treatment if this occurs.

If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or the Poisons Information Centre (Ph: 131126).
If skin contact occurs, remove contaminated clothing and wash the skin thoroughly.

Additional Safety Information:

Self-inoculation can cause serious localised reactions.
If accidental self-injection occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre as soon as
possible. Phone 131126. Inform the doctor or Poisons Information Centre that this is an oil-based product.
If additional hazard information is required, refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

Storage:

Store below 25°C (Air Conditioning) in the original container.
Protect from light.
Do not freeze.
Discard within 24 hours of first broaching.
